Private Residence
1131 NW 5th
Due to the unique property’s size, approx. 50’x43’, rezoning was required, simply to allow a single-family structure, since standard zoning requires a minimum lot size of 6,000 sf. Architect Ken Fitzsimmons of TASK design filed a SPUD to allow a residence or mixed-use structure up to 50’ tall so the owners could build a home for their growing family. The owners wanted the architecture to be functional, unique and relatively affordable. Although the house is very close to the street(s) the configuration of openings along with a 7’ tall privacy fence provides a courtyard like area for the main level while maintaining privacy and allowing natural daylight and views of downtown on the upper levels. Awnings along the south and east help block direct sun. The industrial like character of the exterior with varied metal cladding and openings evokes movement and gives the tall building a human scale. The functions include an open living kitchen area/ connected to yard on main level, bedrooms on second and third and a lookout with deck area on the fourth. The interior with exposed framing and simple durable materials provide a more neutral, warm and comfortable environment for the family. The hybrid structural frame of steel and wood was designed by 360 Engineering
